Venous insufficiency in a nutshell:

  • Venous insufficiency/disease is extremely common and thought to effect upwards of 30 million Americans with a slight female predilection.

  • Multiple risk factors are involved with genetics playing the largest role. If both your mother and father had vein disease, you are about 90 percent likely to develop vein problems yourself.

  • In addition to the unsightly appearance of spider and varicose veins, they can often be symptomatic. Common symptoms include aching, itching, leg swelling and heaviness. In severe cases, wounds or ulcers can develop.

Treatment options:

  • Conservative therapy with compressive hose/stockings (sometimes a short trial of conservative therapy is required by insurance).

  • Endovenous thermal ablation (EVLT)

  • Ambulatory phlebectomy

  • Sclerotherapy
